COMPULSIVE EATING

Do you eat when you are not hungry? Do you have feelings of guilt after overeating? Are you constantly thinking of food, eating and weight?

Compulsive eating usually begins slowly and may start back as far as childhood when it is argued that eating patterns are formed. It can be an addiction and is often associated with comfort using food as a replacement to what is missing.

Compulsive eating disorder can be dangerous having an emotional and physical impact on both men and women. As a result, it can lead to medical conditions such as obesity, diabetes, depression, irregular periods, heart disease and elevated cholesterol levels.

TREATMENT

Professional counseling and/or support centres, medication and sometimes hospitalisation will be required.  The compulsive overeater has to realise that there is a problem and must take responsibility for getting help.

If you think you may have a compulsive eating disorder, see http://www.overeaters.org/   as this is an excellent site for those who need support with this disorder. They offer a 12 step recovery program that assists the compulsive eater to live without the need for excess food.
